Shams Mask workshops

Shams Summer School 2010 (London) This July, Shams is running two intensive week-long workshops. Two key approaches to performance offer a compelling insight into their working methods: Neutral Mask and Clown through Mask. The two workshops complement one another, exploring how the universal and the personal interrelate. Both workshops are led by artistic director Jonathan Young, and can be taken either together or on their own.

Neutral Mask explores the fundamentals that allow a performer to reach out and communicate dynamically to an audience without self-consciousness; Clown through Mask is a journey into the heart of our own unique ridiculousness, imaginative worlds and creative voice.  Both workshops are a journey out of head-space and into a playful awareness where the imagination, emotions and body are free to express their truths in performance.

Neutral Mask 12 – 16 July, 10am – 5pm / Clown through Mask 19 – 23 July, 10am – 5ppm

I would definitely recommend this course to anyone interested in performance. The work is surprising, challenging, powerful, and will stay with me for a long time. It has become a part of my body and unlocked vivid and strange places in my imagination which have helped me creatively. Jonathan has a special way of empowering his students - he is adept at creating an atmosphere that can both challenge and nurture. Daniel Hernandez

Venue: Eastbourne House Arts, Bullards Place, E2 0PT.

Tube: Bethnal Green (Central Line, Zone 2).

The course is led by Jonathan Young, artistic director of Shams, an experienced teacher, performer and creator whose work combines visual theatre, circus, multimedia and site-specific work. He is currently touring Shams’ promenade-installation piece Reykjavik prior to a run at the Edinburgh Festival in August. He trained with Jacques Lecoq, Sue Morrison and Phillipe Gaulier.
